1 · What the graph read from it

What it found

Each row is one number read from the abstract, on the scale the paper reported it, with its interval. Left of the dashed line favours the treatment, right favours the comparator. Under each row is the sentence it came from. New to these charts? A ten-minute tutorial.

The abstract states no effect estimate the extractor could read, or names no intervention and outcome on the map, so this paper lights no cell and moves no belief. It is still indexed, cited and linked below.

2 · The registry

The trial behind it

Trials whose registry record cites this paper, or whose number appears in the abstract. A trial that started after this paper was published is citing it as background, not reporting it.

Neither the registry nor the abstract names a trial number. If this is a trial report, that itself is worth knowing.

Abstract

backgroundThe expression of selenium-binding protein 1 (SELENBP1), a molecule responsible for the absorption of selenium in the colon, is crucial for its immunoregulatory effect, but this phenomenon has not been studied in patients with UC. The present study aimed to determine the clinical outcome of SELENBP1 expression in colonic tissue from patients with UC.

methodsThe relative mRNA expression of SELENBP1 was analyzed in 34 patients with UC and 20 controls. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 19.

resultsSELENBP1 gene expression was significantly lower in patients with active UC than those with UC in remission (

conclusionsThe upregulation of SELENBP1 was associated with a benign clinical course of UC. This is the first report suggesting the immunoregulatory role of SELENBP1 in patients with UC.
