1 · What the graph read from it

What it found

Each row is one number read from the abstract, on the scale the paper reported it, with its interval. Left of the dashed line favours the treatment, right favours the comparator. Under each row is the sentence it came from. New to these charts? A ten-minute tutorial.

The abstract states no effect estimate the extractor could read, or names no intervention and outcome on the map, so this paper lights no cell and moves no belief. It is still indexed, cited and linked below.

2 · The registry

The trial behind it

Trials whose registry record cites this paper, or whose number appears in the abstract. A trial that started after this paper was published is citing it as background, not reporting it.

Neither the registry nor the abstract names a trial number. If this is a trial report, that itself is worth knowing.

Abstract

backgroundLong-term fasting demonstrates greater therapeutic potential and broader application prospects in extreme environments than intermittent fasting.

methodThis pilot study of 10-day complete fasting (CF), with a small sample size of 13 volunteers, aimed to investigate the time-series impacts on gut microbiome, serum metabolome, and their interrelationships with biochemical indices.

resultsThe results show CF significantly affected gut microbiota diversity, composition, and interspecies interactions, characterized by an expansion of the Proteobacteria phylum (about six-fold) and a decrease in Bacteroidetes (about 50%) and Firmicutes (about 34%) populations. Notably, certain bacteria taxa exhibited complex interactions and strong correlations with serum metabolites implicated in energy and amino acid metabolism, with a particular focus on fatty acylcarnitines and tryptophan derivatives. A key focus of our study was the effect of

conclusionsOur pilot study suggests that alterations in gut microbiota during CF contribute to the shift of energy metabolic substrate and the establishment of a novel homeostatic state during prolonged fasting.
