1 · What the graph read from it

What it found

Each row is one number read from the abstract, on the scale the paper reported it, with its interval. Left of the dashed line favours the treatment, right favours the comparator. Under each row is the sentence it came from. New to these charts? A ten-minute tutorial.

The abstract states no effect estimate the extractor could read, or names no intervention and outcome on the map, so this paper lights no cell and moves no belief. It is still indexed, cited and linked below.

2 · The registry

The trial behind it

Trials whose registry record cites this paper, or whose number appears in the abstract. A trial that started after this paper was published is citing it as background, not reporting it.

Neither the registry nor the abstract names a trial number. If this is a trial report, that itself is worth knowing.

Abstract

backgroundElevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels are a key factor in the early formation and progression of atherosclerosis. Monocytes in individuals with an elevated Lp(a) level are represented by an activated inflammatory phenotype and have an increased ability for transendothelial migration. This work studies the association between Lp(a), monocytes, and the progression of carotid atherosclerosis in patients with premature coronary heart disease (CHD).

methodsThis study included 102 patients with CHD manifested before 55 in men and 60 in women who underwent two carotid duplex scans with an interval of 5 [3; 8] years. The criteria for the progression of carotid atherosclerosis were the appearance of new plaque and an increase in stenosis by >10% in any of the six segments. The lipid profile, Lp(a), and hematology with the calculation of the lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR) were determined in all the patients.

resultsThe median blood monocyte count was 0.54 × 10

conclusionsAn elevated Lp(a) level and monocyte count provide the highest probability of the progression of carotid atherosclerosis in patients with premature CHD.
