Abstract

The label on dispensed medicines should provide the patients with clear and complete instructions about their medications. The patient's knowledge of their dispensed medication as they exit health facilities holds a central place in the overall outcome of treatment. This study aimed to assess labeling and patient understanding of dispensed drugs as a pharmaceutical care quality. Institutional-based cross-sectional prospective study was conducted at Felegehiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospital from June 1 - 30, 2023. Data was collected prospectively from patients or caregivers using a structured questionnaire. The data was then analyzed by SPSS 26.0 and finally presented by descriptive statistics. A total of 341 respondents participated in this study with a total of 532 drugs being dispensed to them. The mean dispensing time spent with patients was 102 s. The mean patient knowledge score and the mean labeling score of dispensed drugs were found to be 66.7% and 49.71% of the total expected score, respectively. None of the respondents recalled any additional information (e.g. side effects, drug-drug (food) interactions) about the dosage regimen of specific drugs they received. The study highlights inadequate labeling and counseling practices, with incomplete medication information and limited patient knowledge. Enhancing dispenser training, providing patient education materials, and improving label quality are recommended to promote safe and effective medication use.
