Abstract
backgroundMetabolic surgery (MS) as a therapeutic approach for infertility has attracted considerable research attention. The primary objective of this study was to systematically analyze the distinctive characteristics of scholarly publications focusing on the application of MS for infertility treatment. This investigation sought to provide an evidence-based overview of the current state of research in this field and to identify potential future developments and emerging trends.
methodsA systematic and comprehensive literature search was conducted in the Web of Science and Scopus databases to retrieve publications related to MS for infertility between 1998 and 2024. The search strategy employed key terms including "infertility," "metabolic surgery," and "bariatric surgery" to identify relevant scholarly articles. To analyze the bibliometric features of the retrieved publications, VOSviewer and R software were utilized. The analysis covered multiple dimensions, such as the total number of publications, contributions by individual countries and research institutions, identification of the most frequently cited authors, publication patterns across journals, citation frequency, and the extraction of keywords associated with prominent scientific trends in the field.
resultsA comprehensive literature search identified 3,642 peer-reviewed papers investigating MS in relation to infertility, demonstrating a field currently experiencing rapid expansion. Research contributions originated from 2,282 institutions across 76 countries, with the United States of America being the most productive country, accounting for 781 publications and maintaining a leading position in this research domain. Among contributing institutions, Harvard University emerged as the most prolific contributor. At the individual level, Devlieger R ranked as the most productive author, with 32 publications to their name. The journal Obesity Surgery published the highest number of relevant articles (n = 378), establishing itself as the foremost publication outlet in this field. Future research frontiers are expected to focus on three primary areas: the correlation between infertility and obesity, comparative analyses of various metabolic surgical procedures, and the underlying mechanisms linking metabolic syndrome to infertility.
conclusionsAlthough the number of studies on MS for infertility has increased significantly, research specifically targeting the association between obesity and infertility, surgical procedures, and underlying mechanisms remains relatively limited. Furthermore, despite the gradual advancement of basic research, the specific mechanisms of action of MS in treating infertility and the long-term efficacy of MS still require in-depth investigation. It is anticipated that these research directions are expected to become new hotspots in the future.
