1 · What the graph read from it

What it found

Each row is one number read from the abstract, on the scale the paper reported it, with its interval. Left of the dashed line favours the treatment, right favours the comparator. Under each row is the sentence it came from. New to these charts? A ten-minute tutorial.

The abstract states no effect estimate the extractor could read, or names no intervention and outcome on the map, so this paper lights no cell and moves no belief. It is still indexed, cited and linked below.

2 · The registry

The trial behind it

Trials whose registry record cites this paper, or whose number appears in the abstract. A trial that started after this paper was published is citing it as background, not reporting it.

Neither the registry nor the abstract names a trial number. If this is a trial report, that itself is worth knowing.

Abstract

backgroundHypercholesterolemia and hyperglycemia are serious health problems that have been linked to low testosterone levels and testicular dysfunction. No previous studies have examined the protective effects of policosanol against testicular injury induced in rats by hypercholesterolemia and hyperglycemia. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the protective effect of policosanol against testicular injury in hypercholesterolemic hyperglycemic rats, and to compare them to those of atorvastatin, a standard hypolipidemic drug.

methodsRats were assigned into normal and hypercholesterolemic hyperglycemic groups that received an STZ injection and a high cholesterol diet. The hypercholesterolemic hyperglycemic control group (HC-STZ) received no further treatment. The policosanol group received oral policosanol, daily for 8 weeks, while the atorvastatin group received oral atorvastatin, daily for 8 weeks.

resultsBoth policosanol and atorvastatin increased testis weight and serum testosterone levels and improved the histological architecture of the testes. Their therapeutic effects in the testes were mediated via reducing oxidative stress, exerting an antiapoptotic effect, and improving the levels of enzymes responsible for testosterone synthesis.

conclusionSince policosanol showed similar therapeutic effects to those of atorvastatin, it may be a promising therapeutic approach against testicular injury in the context of hypercholesterolemia and diabetes.
