Abstract

This study developed the Deep Vein Thrombosis Prophylaxis Motivation Scale (DVT-PMS) grounded in Protection Motivation Theory and evaluated its psychometric properties in post-arthroplasty patients. Using a sequential mixed-methods design, items were generated from literature review, semi-structured interviews, and expert panel consultation, then tested in a cross-sectional psychometric survey. The final DVT-PMS contains 41 items grouped into five dimensions: threat appraisal (perceived susceptibility and severity), behavioral incentives (external facilitators and prompts), response efficacy (belief in the effectiveness of anticoagulant prophylaxis), self-efficacy (confidence in performing preventive behaviors), and response cost (perceived barriers and burdens). Psychometric evaluation included item analysis, content validity, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, convergent and discriminant validity testing, and reliability assessment. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a five-factor solution accounting for 72.25% of variance. Content validity indices were high, Cronbach’s α ranged 0.919–0.966 across the scale, and split-half reliability was 0.797. The DVT-PMS offers a practical tool to assess cognitive antecedents of protection motivation for post-discharge DVT prophylaxis.
