1 · What the graph read from it

What it found

Each row is one number read from the abstract, on the scale the paper reported it, with its interval. Left of the dashed line favours the treatment, right favours the comparator. Under each row is the sentence it came from. New to these charts? A ten-minute tutorial.

The abstract states no effect estimate the extractor could read, or names no intervention and outcome on the map, so this paper lights no cell and moves no belief. It is still indexed, cited and linked below.

2 · The registry

The trial behind it

Trials whose registry record cites this paper, or whose number appears in the abstract. A trial that started after this paper was published is citing it as background, not reporting it.

Neither the registry nor the abstract names a trial number. If this is a trial report, that itself is worth knowing.

Abstract

BACKGROUND/

objectivesSerum calcium concentrations have been associated with bone mineral density (BMD), but results seem to depend on sex. Genetic variants in the Ryanodine Receptor1 (

methodsSerum samples from 966 participants were obtained from the third measurement of the Health Workers Cohort Study (HWCS) 2017-2019, conducted by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). All participants included in this study were of Mexican Mestizo origin and had data on BMD. We measured ionized calcium and genotyped the genetic variants rs2288888 (g.38455542G>A) and rs11083462 (g.38469040C>T) of the

resultsOur results show that elevated serum calcium concentrations in females are associated with lower BMD at the hip and femoral neck. In contrast, higher calcium concentrations in males were associated with greater total hip BMD. In our study, the variants rs2288888 and rs11083462 were associated with higher serum calcium concentrations (under-adjusted and unadjusted data) in males but not females.

conclusionsSerum calcium levels are associated with BMD, depending on sex. The
