Efficacy of polyglycolic acid sheet plus oral steroid on the esophageal stricture after endoscopic submucosal dissection: a propensity score matched retrospective study.
Article in BMC surgery, 2026. The graph could read no effect estimate from its abstract, so it casts no vote on the map. Not yet cited in PubMed.
What it found
Each row is one number read from the abstract, on the scale the paper reported it, with its interval. Left of the dashed line favours the treatment, right favours the comparator. Under each row is the sentence it came from. New to these charts? A ten-minute tutorial.
The abstract states no effect estimate the extractor could read, or names no intervention and outcome on the map, so this paper lights no cell and moves no belief. It is still indexed, cited and linked below.
The trial behind it
Trials whose registry record cites this paper, or whose number appears in the abstract. A trial that started after this paper was published is citing it as background, not reporting it.
Neither the registry nor the abstract names a trial number. If this is a trial report, that itself is worth knowing.

Abstract
backgroundThe preventive effect of oral steroid plus polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheet has not been reported until now.
methodsClinical and endoscopic characteristics were recorded in patients with oral steroid or PGA sheet plus oral steroid after esophageal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). Propensity score matching was used to reduce selection bias. The endoscopic balloon dilation (EBD) times and stricture rates were compared.
resultsThe PGA sheet plus oral steroid prophylaxis was reported higher stricture rate (38.7% vs. 37.5%) and refractory stricture rate (9.7% vs. 9.1%) than the oral steroid group. After propensity score matching, the stenosis rate was reduced under the PGA sheet use (38.7% vs 64.5%, p=0.042).In subgroup analysis, additional PGA sheet achieved a lower stricture rate than oral steroid alone in the patients with non-circumferential mucosal defect (23.5% vs 61.1%, p=0.025), but not for refractory stricture incidence (0.0% vs 11.1%, p=0.486). The hybrid treatment did not exhibit superior efficacy for patients with circumferential mucosal defects, whether for stricture (57.1% vs 69.2%) or refractory stricture (21.4% vs 38.5%).
conclusionsThe PGA sheet plus oral steroid is safe, and compared to oral steroid, the hybrid treatment significantly reduced the stricture rate.Further studies with larger sample sizes are warranted to investigate the potential of this hybrid treatment on preventing post-ESD esophageal stricture, especially in patients with circumferential mucosal defects.
