Abstract

The ambulatory arterial stiffness index (AASI) has emerged as an ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) measure of stiffness and is supposedly useful in younger subjects. The objective of our study was to evaluate the relationships between the AASI and indices of arterial stiffness in a pediatric population at risk of hypertension. WHAT IS KNOWN: • The ambulatory arterial stiffness index (AASI) has emerged as an ambulatory blood pressure monitoring measure of stiffness and is supposedly useful in younger subjects. Few adult studies validated the concept of AASI as a marker of arterial stiffness, and recent studies suggested the need for AASI measurement in pediatric subjects. WHAT IS NEW: • Our cross-sectional study, which used different methods for the assessment of vascular remodeling, shows that the AASI is not a reliable marker of arterial stiffness in children at risk of secondary hypertension.
