Abstract
backgroundThis study aims to compare the discriminative ability of the Visceral Obesity Index (VOI), body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in identifying abnormal glucose metabolism (previously undiagnosed type 2 diabetes and prediabetes) in adults during a single screening visit.
methodsThis cross-sectional observational study included 4,250 individuals aged 25 to 60 years. All analyses were based on data obtained during a single screening visit. Participants were recruited consecutively from outpatient clinics and general medical practices in Moscow (Russian Federation) and Dubai (United Arab Emirates). The methods included anthropometric measurements (BMI, WC) and laboratory biochemical tests. Statistical analysis involved univariate and multivariate logistic regression to assess associations with type 2 diabetes, adjusted for age and gender; odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to compare the diagnostic performance of VOI, BMI and WC. The area under the curve (AUC) was then calculated for each indicator. conclusionsVOI demonstrated a higher AUC compared with BMI and WC at identifying previously undiagnosed type 2 diabetes and prediabetes in adults. VOI may be a useful indicator for identifying individuals with abnormal glucose metabolism in screening settings.
