Abstract

A significant class of 1,3,5-triazine-based chemicals having broad applications in supramolecular chemistry, coordination chemistry, polymer science, and photocatalysis are reported. The structural traits, tautomerism, hydrogen-bonding behaviour, and synthetic methods connected to cyanuric acid (CA) and its analogues, such as melamine, TTCA, cyanuric chloride, ammeline, and ammelide, are reviewed in this article. Their capacity to create highly structured supramolecular structures through complementary hydrogen-bond donor-acceptor interactions which have a significant impact on crystal packing and self-assembly is highlighted in particular. Sulphur substitution in TTCA greatly improves metal-binding capability and results in physiologically active metal complexes, as demonstrated by the differing coordination behaviour of triazines containing oxygen and sulphur. With an emphasis on photocatalytic and environmental applications, recent developments in graphitic carbon nitride materials and polymers produced from CA and TTCA are also covered. Important structure-property correlations and potential avenues for future research are identified in the review.
