Abstract
Background: Posing a severe global health challenge, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has persistently poor prognosis, that is mainly attributed to its advanced stage at diagnosis. The explosion of information makes it difficult to grasp paradigm shifts systematically. The aim of the present study is to comprehensively analyze the global research landscape and to get a clue for future research hotspots. Methods: Publications on early diagnosis for HCC indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded, Web of Science Core Collection from January 2016 to March 2026 were retrieved. Bibliometrix (R package) was used for analysis and visualization of the data. Results: A total of 9,683 documents by 41,716 authors from 1,602 sources were included. The publication volume increases stably, and the citations keep growing. Cancers has the most publication number, and Hepatology is the most cited one. China and USA are the dominant countries in this field. Egyptian Knowledge Bank is the most productive affiliation, and Singal AG is the most productive author. Besides topic-relevant keywords, "biomarkers", "risk factor", "cirrhosis", "expression", and "hepatitis B virus", etc. are frequent terms. Thematic shifts showed transitioning from traditional monitoring methods toward innovative technologies and integrated strategies. Conclusions: The present bibliometric analysis revealed key developments in the field of early diagnosis for HCC and several critical gaps. Future research could focus on prospective validation of multi-analyte panels, development of openly accessible artificial intelligence models, and establishment of international consortia.
