Abstract

backgroundGlucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists are increasingly prescribed for medical weight management and have rapidly gained relevance within plastic, aesthetic, and reconstructive surgery. Their widespread use has raised questions regarding perioperative safety, tissue quality, body contouring outcomes, and aesthetic aging, prompting a growing but fragmented body of literature.

methodsA bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection to identify the 50 most cited publications addressing the intersection of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and plastic, aesthetic, or reconstructive surgery. Bibliographic data were extracted and analyzed to evaluate publication trends, citation performance, contributing authors and institutions, journals, geographic distribution, and thematic structures. Keyword co-occurrence and network analyses were performed to identify dominant research domains and emerging topics.

resultsNearly all highly cited articles were published between 2023 and 2025, reflecting the recent and abrupt emergence of this field. The literature was geographically dominated by the USA and was distributed across a wide range of institutions and authors, without clear investigative hubs. Thematic analysis revealed three principal domains: aesthetic aging and facial soft-tissue changes, perioperative management and safety considerations, and body contouring following pharmacologically induced weight loss. Keyword clustering demonstrated an evolving shift from metabolic and bariatric contexts toward aesthetic and procedural decision-making.

conclusionsThe literature on glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists in plastic surgery is rapidly expanding but remains conceptually immature and largely descriptive. This bibliometric analysis highlights current research priorities, influential contributions, and critical gaps, underscoring the need for prospective, outcome-driven studies to inform evidence-based surgical practice.
