1 · What the graph read from it

What it found

Each row is one number read from the abstract, on the scale the paper reported it, with its interval. Left of the dashed line favours the treatment, right favours the comparator. Under each row is the sentence it came from. New to these charts? A ten-minute tutorial.

The abstract states no effect estimate the extractor could read, or names no intervention and outcome on the map, so this paper lights no cell and moves no belief. It is still indexed, cited and linked below.

2 · The registry

The trial behind it

Trials whose registry record cites this paper, or whose number appears in the abstract. A trial that started after this paper was published is citing it as background, not reporting it.

Neither the registry nor the abstract names a trial number. If this is a trial report, that itself is worth knowing.

Abstract

The selective synthesis of α-substituted alcohols from epoxides remains challenging. A promising strategy involves Lewis acid (LA)-catalyzed Meinwald rearrangement of epoxides, followed by 1,2-addition to in situ-generated aldehydes. However, generalizing this approach is complicated by a mechanistic contradiction: LAs promote the rearrangement but also facilitate side reactions of inherently enolizable aldehydes. Here, we show that NaI stabilizes these aldehydes by forming reversible α-oxy iodides, temporarily suppressing side reactions while maintaining their availability for Ni-catalyzed 1,2-arylation. This dynamic "deactivation" mechanism enables the synthesis of α-arylated alcohols from arylboronic acids and diverse epoxides, including previously elusive 2-alkyl variants. Extensive screening identifies a chiral bidentate nitrogen ligand that allows a rare asymmetric synthesis of α-substituted alcohols from racemic epoxides, in an enantioconvergent manner. Moreover, the method demonstrates broader applicability beyond using epoxides merely as bench-stable aliphatic aldehyde precursors, expanding their utility in alcohol synthesis.
